🌍 Dating with translation
A dating app with translation built into every chat
Real chemistry does not always come with a shared first language. Heartwave translates the messages you receive into your language automatically, so you can get to know someone without copying and pasting into a translator.
How translation works in your chats
In Edit profile, choose the language you want to read your messages in. From then on, messages you receive are translated into it automatically. The translation appears under the original message, so you always see exactly what the other person wrote as well as what it means.
You keep writing the way you normally write. Your match reads your messages in the language they have chosen, and you read theirs in yours.
The 23 languages
Translation works in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, German, Italian, Dutch, Polish, Russian, Ukrainian, Turkish, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Indonesian, Swedish, Danish, Finnish, Greek, Czech, Romanian and Hungarian.
Why it matters for dating
Plenty of people are more relaxed, funnier and more themselves in their first language. Translation in the chat means you can be yourself from the first message, and you are not limited to matching with people who share your strongest language.
- Newcomers can meet people in their new city without waiting until their English or French feels perfect.
- Bilingual couples and families can talk the way that feels natural to each of them.
- You can ask about a phrase that reads oddly, which is often a good conversation starter in itself.
Honest about its limits
Translation is done by DeepL, an outside translation service, so the text of messages you receive is sent to DeepL to be translated. Automatic translation can make mistakes, especially with slang, jokes and very short messages. If something reads oddly, check the original or simply ask your match what they meant.
Translation helps you talk; it does not replace getting to know someone. A voice or video call inside the app is a good next step once you are chatting, and your phone number stays private.
Matched on what matters, in any language
Heartwave matches you on your Heartprint: how you communicate, your lifestyle, your values and your social energy. Each profile shows a compatibility score and a Chemistry Check, so you can see where you click before the first message, whatever language it is in.
Every feature, including translation, is free for everyone right now, with no subscription. Optional face verification and safety tools like DateGuard help you meet with confidence.
Tips for chatting across languages
- Write in full sentences where you can. Translation works best with clear, complete messages, and less well with abbreviations.
- Go easy on slang and in-jokes at first, or explain them. They are the things most likely to come out strangely.
- Read the original as well as the translation. Even if you only know a few words of the other language, it helps you catch tone.
- If something sounds rude or odd, assume it is the translation before you assume it is the person, and ask.
- Learn a few words of each other’s language. It is a kind gesture and a great thing to talk about on a call or a first date.
